The Spenser Longfellow Trading Company - May 2000

From the Company Offices

Greetings and well met
It's time for to get the cob webs off all the gear as we prepare for our first event of the season, May Faire.  It is so exciting to see the enthusiasm being fostered among so many of you around getting involved and taking officer positions and volunteering to coordinate different functions!!

With the season beginning we will be seeing more and more new faces in our encampment as we welcome the guests of our compatriots.  If you are bringing a new person to an event please take few moments to introduce them to the House via the email list prior to the event so we can make them feel more welcome.  Francesco is suggesting that we add brief bios to our submissions for the newsletter.  I think this is a great idea and will go a long way to help us learn more about each other.

Looking forward to seeing what new and exciting tourney gear y'all have acquired in the off season!

Thanks for all you do!

Cate

In case you were wondering about the ongoing saga - things seem to have quieted down a bit.

Kierran is still battling the evil Ian MacDougal but rumor has it Moyra and Fallyn have something in store for him.

Phillip and Catelin were called to the palace by His Majesty, where they were asked to tend to some matters off the coast of Dover involving a Sardinian ambassador.  Giovanni accompanied Catelin aboard the Hawk to act as interpreter.

Dr. Kase has been - OH MY GOD - shanghaied and is off for god knows where!!

Francesco was called to Italy to tend to matters of the family most dire.

HOW TO RECOMMEND SOMEONE FOR AN AWARD, PART II:  SOME AN TIRIAN KINGDOM-LEVEL AWARDS AND HONORS

Those items suggested, here following, are those for which a recommendation would be necessary.  Awards and Honours such as Viscounty, County, and Ducal Scrolls automatically come at the end of serving as a Prince/Princess of a Principality, King/Queen of a Kingdom once, or King/Queen of a Kingdom more than once, respectively, and recommendations are neither appropriate nor necessary.

SOME AWARDS AND HONORS OF THE KINGDOM OF AN TIR

(For awards and honors of Principalities and Baronies, see their respective governing documents, or contact the respective branch's chief Herald.)

PEERAGE LEVEL AWARDS:

Recommendations for the following should go to the respective Regional Secretary of the Candidate.  Courtesy copies may be sent to the Kingdom Secretary, Their Majesties, Their Royal Highnesses (heirs to the Kingdom),Their Highnesses (of the Principality, if any), Tanists (of the Principality, if any), and their Baronial Coronet (if any).

"General Criteria" for Peerage:  includes a knowledge of games, dance, chess, heraldry, fighting, and the arts & sciences.  The rest of the criteria are things like service, courtesy, respect for rank, the Crown, and the Kingdom and at least a few subtle qualities that are hard to put into words.
All of which is known as "Peer Like Qualities."

1)  Order of the Pelican: for individuals who meet the general criteria for Peerage and who have provided great and long-sustained service to the Kingdom at least equal to the level commonly found among existing members of the Order.  Membership in the Order confers a Patent of Arms.
2)  Order of the Laurel:  for individuals who meet the general criteria for the Peerage and who have demonstrated great skill in one or more of the arts and sciences at least equal to the level commonly found among existing members of the Order.  Membership in the Order confers a Patent of Arms. (This includes non-armored combat such as Archery and Rapier.)

3)  Order of Chivalry (Knighthood or Mastery-at-Arms):  for armored fighters (aka:  "heavies") who meet the general criteria for Peerage and who display skill at arms at least equal to the level commonly found among existing members of the Order. --- Prospective members accepted by the Crown may choose either Knighthood, if they are able or willing to always place themselves in fealty to the Crown, or Mastery-at-Arms, if they are not.  Membership in the Order confers a Patent of Arms.

GRANT LEVEL AWARDS:

Recommendations for the following should go to Their Majesties, and Their Royal Highnesses (heirs to the Kingdom, if any).  Courtesy copies may be sent Their Highnesses of the gentle's Principality (if any), the gentle's Tanists (if any), and the gentle's Baronial Coronet (if any).

1)  The Order of the Goutte de Sang (Drop of Blood):  for those especially deserving of honor and recognition for substantial service to the Kingdom.

2)  The Order of the Jambe de Lion (Arm of the Lion):  for those especially deserving of honor and recognition for skill in the arts and sciences and willingness to share their skill with others.

3)  A Grant of Arms:  for those especially deserving of honor and recognition in areas not otherwise covered by any of the specific Grant-level Orders. (Example, skill and ability in armored combat.)  The awarding of a Grant of Arms obviously confers a Grant of Arms.

(All recommendations for the following Orders should be addressed to the respective Order in care of Their Majesties.  Copies to the usual people is fine, as are copies to a member of the respective Order who can then pass the information along to other members of the Order.)
4)  The Order of the Gray Goose Shaft is awarded by the Crown on the advice of the members of the Order for excellence in archery. Membership in the Order confers a Grant of Arms.

5)  The Order of the White Scarf is awarded by the Crown on the Advice of the members of the Order for excellence and skill in rapier combat.  Membership in the Order confers a Grant of Arms.

6)  The Order of the Hasta Leonis (Spear of the Lion) is awarded by the Crown on the Advice of the members of the order for excellence and chivalry in the pursuit and practice of the art of War. Membership in the Order confers a Grant of Arms.

AWARD LEVEL AWARDS

1)  An Award of Arms:  for those deserving of honor and recognition for skill, service, or something not otherwise mentioned.  The presentation of an Award of Arms obviously confers an Award of Arms.

And now a word from our Baronial Chatelaine, Gwen:

Greetings Dear Household,
Gwen, here, reporting in as the new Chatelaine of Dragon's Laire.  I must say, even though I have just started, there is great satisfaction in the more in-depth participation in Our Society.

Things got off to brisk start right away.  I have found a deputy - her name is Chris Schultz.  I will be happy to introduce you to her the first chance that we get.  Also, this month I have set up a demo at Sunnyslope Elementary School in Port Orchard.  If any of you are interested in participating in a demo, please let me know.  The children at the schools get a big kick out of medieval clothing and armor, and I understand that they ask some pretty good questions, too!

I have also made contact with a gentle in Meridies to arrange an introduction for our beloved Antonitus, who moved to Florida last fall.  Since then I have received word from the gentle that he is in the process of trying to contact Antonitus.

June Faire is coming up fast, and thanks to the Great and Powerful Merchantcrat (otherwise known as Lord Phillip), we will have a "Chatelaine's Corner" off of the eric, right in the middle of everything.  Lady Ellsbeth and I are both merchanting at June Faire, with the "Chatelaine's Corner" in between our two tents.  In this way we will always have someone on duty at the Chatelaine's booth.

Remember, we are ALL Chatelaines, and June Faire is our opportunity to educate and introduce the mundane world to magic and majesty of this Society..

Gwen (who's is name being submitted, and subject to change once again to Gwenllyen Potter) dragonfirepottery@sinclair.net

Gossip:

We have two new officers in Dragon's Laire.  Sensei Tsuruko (sp) is the new Equestrian officer, and Gwenllyen Potter is the new Chatelaine.  Congratulations ladies!
........Lucinda completed several Ithra classes in costuming recently.

FROM THE EDITORIAL STAFF

I would like a short bio including whatever relevant mundane/SCA details (hobbies, interests, background, who introduced them to the group, etc.) are known for any and all people included in the newsletter from here-on-out.  I think this would prove very helpful.    (Francesco)

Cate Adds:  This is a mighty fine idea!  It would be good to have such a thing on file for everyone in the House so that we could use it for information purposes.  Would someone please volunteer to coordinate this activity?
